After consulting with the Balearic government, clubs in Ibiza may be allowed to open in October.
The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports that Ibiza Nightlife Manager José Luis Benítez and Asociacion Balear De Ocio Noturno Y Entretenimiento (“Balearic Night Leisure and Association” in English, commonly referred to as ABONE) president Miguel Pérez-Marsá proposed new ideas for reopening clubs and venues. Among them are reduced capacity and mask enforcement on the dance floor. Government Spokesperson and Minister of Tourism Iago Negueruela was also in attendance.
“Finding a formula that guarantees health security and is viable for business is the priority,” said Pérez-Marsá.
The proposal comes as Ibiza recently lifted a COVID-19 restriction banning night-time events between 2:00 AM-6:00 PM. It will continue until September 29th, when officials will meet to reevaluate the situation.
A “pilot event” was conducted on June 25th at the Hard Rock Hotel to test the island’s nightlife-related COVID-19 protocols. Around 1,200 key workers were invited to a party, dubbed “Children of the ’80s,” to test the feasibility of reopening Ibiza nightlife.
According to Diario de Ibiza, of the 1,263 workers in attendance, officials found no COVID-19 infections. All attendees were fully vaccinated while 393 underwent antigen testing beforehand.
Ibiza venues have remained closed since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.
