Selector’s Sounds series follows a procedure that puts music quality before status or industry relationships. Learn how it works.
Brian Sonnleitner and Justin Milkplant‘s West Coast U.S. label From 0-1 has dedicated the past 13 years to cultivating top shelf techno from a field of genuine artists they admire. Their latest compilation, aptly titled 13 Years of From 0-1, captures this longstanding ethos.
The label celebrates its anniversary with a track to represent each year of its lifespan. Specialists from around the globe feature, beginning with Venezuelan talent Juan Trujillo. His glitchy “Untaken Path” hypnotizes as it stomps. Polish veteran Szmer provides a contrasting touch of industrial with “M1.”
DIAPO and The Automatic Message continue down the industrial trail with unrelenting numbers “MOD 6” and “Masked And Featured,” respectively. Meanwhile, A Thousand Details‘ “Orange Man Injected Lysol” contrasts its cheeky title with a steely aesthetic.
Intelligent sound design is key in 13 Years of From0-1. From the cavernous, yet tightly tuned sonics of Andres Gil to the slow burning tensity by Vohkinne, the entire record oozes in studio expertise. Ultimately, the compilation proves that innovation still exists in techno—despite increased market saturation.
13 Years of From0-1 will be available for purchase via From 0-1 Bandcamp on August 30th.
