A newly launched resource aims to chronicle a 30-year period of electronic music history through various forms of media. Dance Music Archive consists of flyers, articles, recordings and artwork from the late ’80s to the late 2010s.
On the top bar of the website, users can pick a specific year and browse different forms of media. The homepage also offers a search option, as well as a “Featured Year” snapshot and other highlighted content. An ongoing work in progress, it will continue to publish more content as time goes by.
Distorted Founder Andi Durrant conceived of the Dance Music Archive. He has dedicated the project to radio producer Duncan Wallace, who passed away in April after a battle with brain cancer.
“During the coronavirus lockdown of Spring 2020 I found myself with a little more time at home than usual,” wrote Durrant. “I was having a dig around the loft and came across a couple of boxes of old guest mixes from my radio shows over the years. I’ve been honored to have some of the biggest names in dance do sessions for us, and I’ve tried to keep as much as possible.”
Durrant went on to explain that he hatched the plan for Dance Music Archive when he came into contact with other “hoarders” online. “But there wasn’t one place to discover them all,” he wrote. “We decided to set about putting it all into one place – a constantly growing and evolving digital museum, which we hope will bring back some amazing memories and provide a place to document the diverse, fascinating and forward-thinking evolution of dance music.”
