The Dirtywave M8 is a powerful new tracker, sequencer, synthesizer and sampler that is completely portable.
Music trackers (“trackers” for short) work in a different manner than widely popular DAWs like Ableton and Logic. Instead of the common horizontal visual display and sequencer, trackers use a vertical timeline to record playback with hexadecimal values over exact chronological positions. M8 employs this approach, its inner software deriving inspiration from famous homebrew Game Boy tracker Little Sound DJ.
A Teensy microcontroller system brings high-speed performance and memory to the M8, allowing for eight monophonic audio tracks and up to 255 patterns in a single project file. A dedicated sample recorder and player is available, with 8, 16, and 24-bit stereo and mono depth. Wavesynth instruments that emulate classic consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis – as well as modern Eurorack hardware – are built into the M8. Along with these features come MIDI input/output, a rechargeable battery, MicroSD storage, and a full color HD touchscreen.
At an affordable pre-order price of $450, the M8 proves an extremely powerful recording studio built into a small package.
