Three prominent organizations in the Irish nightlife community have joined forces for a new documentary, Clubbing Is Culture. The brainchild of No More Hotels, Thinkhouse, and Algorithm, the twenty-minute story highlights some of Ireland’s former nightclubs and explains their significance to the community. They also show how many local-favorite establishments have been shut down over the years and touch on their importance for those unfamiliar with their legacy.

In the documentary, you can hear from notable figures like Hazel Chu, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Philly McMahon of ThisIsPopBabyMona-Lxsa of Gxrl CodeUna Mullally of United Ireland, and designer John Mangru. Accompanying their words are a series of projected art displays showcasing images of the clubs’ past.

In the description of the video, the creators explain the thought process behind their documentary and emphasize the importance of honoring the culture of the nightlife. It reads, “If clubbing continues to be excluded from the traditional definition of culture in people’s minds, we’ll see the eradication of a culture that has persevered through some of humanity’s hardest times, has helped people survive and thrive and has been the catalyst for some of fashion, art, theatre and music’s most iconic moments. Culture.”

The description goes on to show how club culture brings people together and inspires a wealth of creativity while also celebrating the tight-knit community. “With this project, we celebrate the fact that clubbing brings people together, it provides growth, art and identity – as well as a rich economy,” it continues. “We celebrate how clubbing enables us to communicate, create and connect in unique and magical ways.”
