Nile Rodgers Co-Wrote Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” After a Cancer Diagnosis

Seldom do world-class musicians make the kind of comeback that Nile Rodgers has – let alone while battling a potentially fatal illness. The ’70s disco guitarist and co-founding member of Chic took to the stage at Glastonbury Festival this past weekend and revealed that he co-wrote Daft Punk‘s 2013 smash hit “Get Lucky” featuring Pharrell after being diagnosed with an “extremely aggressive cancer.”

Rodgers told the audience that he learned of his ailment six years ago, two prior to the last time he played Glastonbury. At the time he had refrained from discussing it publicly, but beamed this time around while announcing that he was officially cancer free.


“Get Lucky” would go on to catapult not only Rodgers but also Daft Punk and Pharrell back into the mainstream spotlight after selling 9.3 million copies and winning two Grammys. In the time since, the seminal disco and funk guitarist has been afforded the opportunity to reach the youngest generation of dance music fans.

Nile Rodgers continues the 2054 tour with Chic alongside Earth Wind & Fire with a performance in Oakland, California on July 12th.
