Winamp, a popular media player during the ’90s and early 2000s, has gotten a major update for newer generations of operating systems.

Winamp’s official statement says the update “is the culmination of four years’ work since the 5.8 release.” “Two dev teams” were part of the updating process, along with “a pandemic-induced hiatus period [in-between].” The developer teams will now be working on new features for later versions of of the software.

Winamp’s previous update came in 2018, with a leak pressuring the team to release the 5.8 version as an update.

The official statement describes goes into greater detail on the process of modernizing Winamp. “To the end-user, it might not seem like there’s a whole heap of changes,” it reads, “but the largest and hardest part was actually migrating the entire project from VS2008 to VS2019 and getting it all to build successfully.”

Winamp is available to download free from their website. There are some bugs and features which still need testing; a 5.9.1 update to remedy these issues is currently in development. A list of several other issues and features can be found in the official statement.
