Moog CEO Joe Richardson states the Asheville Citizen-Times building is the new locale for the company’s product design, development, and engineering branch.

The company, now part of InMusic, moved to its famous Broadway Street location in 2011. Moog will move into the second floor of the building; the current Citizen-Times staff moves out near the end of March.

Moog’s move will also have them operating above popular café and record press Citizen Vinyl.

Moog also plans expansion of its factory in Weaverville, a short drive north of Asheville. According to a Citizen-Times interview, expanding “will enhance assembly and warehousing capabilities and is more convenient for staff who build the synthesizers.”

SoundCloud Reportedly in Talks for Over $1 Billion Sale https://selector.news/2024/01/23/soundcloud-1-billion-sale/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 23:54:03 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=12422 Sky News reports that The Raine Group and Singaporean state investment fund Tamasek are interviewing banks in order to auction off SoundCloud.

The music streaming service’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) is around $2.1 million. This gain mirrors their near $32 million negative loss reported in 2022. A recent insight from Music Business Worldwide shows the company’s annual profitability sitting at a $310 million revenue.

In 2017, Raine Group and Tamasek acquired majority stake in Soundcloud for $170 million. At the time, the sale valued the company at around $300 million. In February 2020, it also received $75 million in investment from SiriusXM, making the satellite radio company a minority shareholder.

May of 2023 saw an 8% cut in their global staffing. Current CEO Eliah Seton touted the cuts as a way to “ensure the health of our business and get SoundCloud to profitability this year.”

The general sale of SoundCloud will not begin for “some months,” according to the Sky News report.

Audius Hacked for $6.1 Million in AUDIO Tokens https://selector.news/2022/08/03/audius-audio-token-hack/ https://selector.news/2022/08/03/audius-audio-token-hack/#respond Wed, 03 Aug 2022 16:56:42 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11859 Blockchain-powered streaming service Audius was hacked for $6.1 million worth of their AUDIO tokens on Sunday, July 24th.

Audius revealed the attack as a bug exploit in its contract initialization code which allowed “repeated invocations of the initialize functions.” The attacker then transferred 18 million AUDIO tokens to an external wallet. The wallet was then reportedly sold on Uniswap for 705 ETH ($1.07m). Audius also stated the attack was “isolated to the internal state of the staking system (new tokens were not minted), and didn’t affect circulating token supply.”

Timeline of the Attack

25 minutes after the attacker’s second attempt at the transfer succeeded, Audius assembled its response team. The root cause of the exploit was found within an hour and a fix was deployed 87 minutes afterwards. This, Audius stated, was to “patch exploit, freezing currently deployed contracts (including token) as a side effect.”

A finalized patch was deployed within the next three hours. In its post-mortem report, Audius directly addressed shortcomings and oversights in regards to its response to the attack.

“The Audius project team has not worked actively on Solidity/EVM-based code in nearly two years,” reads the report. “It took folks time to get back up to speed on all things here. Staying more in-tune with the latest state of the art of dev/debugging tooling here will help us mount more effective responses in the future.”

Audius’ set of contracts were audited by OpenZeppelin in August 2020, with “additional changes” audited by Kudelski Security in October of 2021.

“Unfortunately this vulnerability was not caught in either case,” Audius stated. “Audits are not bulletproof, and time spent in the market (and the resulting Lindy effect) can help build confidence but does not rule out opportunities for exploitation. These contracts were deployed in October 2020 and this vulnerability has been live in the wild since that time.”

Grupo Empresas Matutes Acquires Dominant Share of Privilege Ibiza https://selector.news/2022/07/11/grupo-empresas-matutes-buys-privilege-ibiza/ https://selector.news/2022/07/11/grupo-empresas-matutes-buys-privilege-ibiza/#respond Mon, 11 Jul 2022 18:04:52 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11776 José María Etxaniz of former Privilege Ibiza parent company Baltanxa S.A. has remained embroiled in a legal dispute with Grupo Empresas Matutes (GEM) since 2018. The latter company is now majority owner of the White Isle nightclub.

“After many years of litigation, Bahía de San Antonio S.A has acquired the shares owned by José María Etxaniz of the company Baltanxa S.A, owner of Privilege, within a judicial process,” GEM announced in a statement to Mixmag. The undisclosed amount paid for the 55% ownership is estimated at 20 million, according to Diario de Ibiza.

Extaniz had sued GEM for unfair competition on the grounds that Ushüaia, another one of their properties, operates as a club without being subject to the same licensing rules as other clubs. The High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands deemed the venue’s license as a hotel establishment “not controversial” and rejected the argument.

The space now known as Privilege Ibiza had previously been occupied by the storied Ku Club since 1979. Extaniz has held majority stake in the club since 1995, when it was finally rebranded.

The club has fallen into disrepair after having been closed for the past two years, according to Periódico de Ibiza. The renovations necessary to reopen the club will preclude it from operating for the remainder of the 2022 season.

Four Tet Settles with Domino Recordings: “They Have Recognized My Original Claim” https://selector.news/2022/06/21/four-tet-settles-domino-recordings/ https://selector.news/2022/06/21/four-tet-settles-domino-recordings/#respond Tue, 21 Jun 2022 16:19:18 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11730 Kieran Hebden, known professionally as Four Tet, has remained embroiled in a legal battle with Domino Recordings since August 2021. The artist and label have now reached a settlement largely in favor of the former.

Hebden’s original claim was that Domino owed him 50% of royalties on streams and downloads of his catalogue, but the label had only paid him 18%. Their original contract did not specify terms for streaming as it did not significantly factor into recorded music revenues at the time. Domino initially argued that misinterpreted the terms of the contract, but Hebden now says that the label is recognizing his original claim.

“[Domino Records] have recognized my original claim, that I should be paid a 50% royalty on streaming and downloads, and that they should be treated as a license rather than the same as a CD or vinyl sale,” Hebden tweeted. “It has been a difficult and stressful experience to work my way through this court case and I’m so glad we got this positive result, but I feel hugely relieved that the process is over.”

Hebden went on to say that he didn’t achieve 100% of his desired outcome. “Sadly, Domino still own parts of my catalogue for life of copyright and would not give me an option to take back ownership,” he wrote.

Born in Putney, England, Hebden first made a name for himself as the guitarist of a post-rock band called Fridge formed in 1995. His first foray into electronic music saw him release the single “Double Density” under the moniker 4T Recordings in 1997, and by 1998 he adopted the stage name Four Tet to release tracks like “Thirtysixtwentyfive” and “Misnomer.” His 2001 album Pause marked his first release on Domino Recordings.

“I hope these types of life of copyright deals become extinct,” wrote Hebden. “The music industry isn’t definitive and given its evolutionary nature it seems crazy to me to try and institutionalise music in that way.”

Racial Discrimination Case Against R&S Records Head Dismissed https://selector.news/2022/05/18/rs-records-raj-chaudhuri-case-dismissed/ https://selector.news/2022/05/18/rs-records-raj-chaudhuri-case-dismissed/#respond Thu, 19 May 2022 01:12:08 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11625 Renaat Vandepapeliere, the head of Belgium-based independent record label R&S Records, has had a legal claim of racial discrimination against him dismissed.

Talent scout Raj Chaudhuri sued the label last year on the grounds that it discriminated against him. Spokespeople for the label said there is “no truth” to the claims, and called them “spurious.”

A London tribunal has now ruled that the case cannot proceed, given that Chaudhuri was a freelancer and not an employee. Vandepapeliere stated that he was “delighted” by the ruling. “This last two years has been absolute hell for me and my partner Sabines, my family, and the artists on our record label,” he said in a statement.

In his claim, Chaudhuri said he attempted to “diversify the label and the artists it worked with,” but found his efforts frustrated or criticized. He alleges that artists he championed were dismissed as “terrible” and “crap.” Chaudhuri also claims that Vandepapeliere dismissed music from ethnic minority artists as “meaningless” and that Vandepapeliere described the history of techno as “very white.”

“Renaat Vandepapeliere is certainly not racist and everyone at R&S Records embraces equality,” said Vandepapeliere’s wife, Sabine Maes.

In their ruling, authorities said that Chaudhuri’s case was not covered by the Equality Act. He was “free to choose how and where to do the work [scouting talent], or not do it at all,” wrote Judge Victoria Wright.

This dispute has been going on for nearly two years. In 2020, U.K.-based producer and DJ Forest White cut ties with the label over their handling of the case.

Apple Discontinues the iPod After 21 Years https://selector.news/2022/05/16/apple-discontinues-the-ipod-after-21-years/ https://selector.news/2022/05/16/apple-discontinues-the-ipod-after-21-years/#respond Tue, 17 May 2022 01:34:21 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11593 Apple’s innovative and groundbreaking portable iPod music player will no longer be in production.

The original iPod was introduced on October 23rd, 2001 and weighed 6.5 ounces, with 1,000-song storage and a 10-hour battery. A smaller version, the iPod nano, arrived in 2004, with a second generation in 2006. The iPod touch made its debut on September 5th, 2007, bringing iPhone’s Multi-Touch interface and 3.5-inch widescreen display to iPod models. Other models include the iPod Mini, 2012’s iPod nano update with 5.4mm, 2.5-inch display, and the miniature iPod shuffle, arriving in 2005.

The latest and last model of iPod touch devices hit markets in 2019. It features the new A10 Fusion chip, AR capability, Group FaceTime, and 256GB of storage.

Most Apple consumers now usually choose an iPhone over an iPod, which can store a whole music library. Alternatively, streaming with Apple Music gives users access to over 90 million songs, saving space on the device.

In a statement, Apple Worldwide Marketing Senior VP Greg Joswiak explained the discontinuation. “Today, the spirit of iPod lives on,” he wrote. “We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV. And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio — there’s no better way to enjoy, discover, and experience music.”

The Apple Watch runs for $279, the iPad starts at $329, and the HomePod mini costs $99.

The iPod touch is available through apple.com, Apple Store locations, and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last.

Beatport Introduces Amapiano Genre Category https://selector.news/2022/05/16/beatport-amapiano-genre/ https://selector.news/2022/05/16/beatport-amapiano-genre/#respond Tue, 17 May 2022 01:19:20 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11586 Streaming giant Beatport is officially recognizing the South African style called amapiano as an official musical genre on their platform.

For years, platforms would lump amapiano into other genres such as Afro house, deep house, and dance/electro-pop. Tracks that were incorrectly categorized will be re-listed under amapiano.

The move comes after prominent names such as DBN Gogo, Focalistic, Major League DJz, and labels such as Jozi Entertainment began evangelizing the sound.

Starting in the Gauteng province of South Africa, amapiano borrows heavily from musical and cultural roots practiced in Black townships across the area. The name ‘amapiano’ merges the Zulu language’s plural article of ‘ama’ with the western instrument of a piano. The term has been around for about nine years and is used to exemplify the coexistence and collaboration of African and Western cultures.

Its foundations are rooted in Kwaito, a genre music created in the ’90s during South Africa’s transition to democracy. The resulting genre is a mixture of house, tech house, and jazz that is being embraced by younger and more DIY-focused South African artists.

Beatport introducing a category for the genre means that the platform can better promote the sound through banners, playlists, and more while helping amapiano artists foster their careers.

More info is available in Beatport’s amapiano section.

New AFEM Survey Explores Neurodiversity in Electronic Music https://selector.news/2022/04/26/afem-survey-neurodiversity-electronic-music/ https://selector.news/2022/04/26/afem-survey-neurodiversity-electronic-music/#respond Wed, 27 Apr 2022 02:05:58 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11459 The Association for Electronic Music (AFEM) is currently running a first-of-its-kind survey exploring neurodiversity in electronic music.

Researchers are asking those in the electronic music industry diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, or Tourette Syndrome to anonymously answer questions regarding their experience. AFEM will then use the results to provide information to individuals and organizations on how to better support neurodivergent coworkers.

Speaking about the survey, AFEM Regional Manager Tristan Hunt said, “For the past five years, AFEM has made championing mental health awareness central to our work. While we’re heartened to see a big increase across the industry in people’s understanding and support of mental health, the subject of neurodiversity still is new or not well known to many. AFEM’s new neuoridiversity survey aims to change that.”

Founded in 2013, AFEM is a trade organization that “promotes and preserves the best of electronic music culture and brings members together as a community to solve issues and develop commercial opportunities.”

On top of championing mental health issues, AFEM campaigns to raise awareness and help prevent instances of sexual harassment. In 2020, they released a “Code of Conduct Against Sexual Harassment and Gender Discrimination” that was authored by their Diversity & Inclusion Working Group.

Those interested in taking the survey can do so here.
