Selector’s Sounds series follows a procedure that puts music quality before status or industry relationships. Learn how it works.
In April, Tresor Records announced a 30th anniversary compilation featuring longtime techno and electro figureheads. Far be it from the historic label to eschew relatively up-and-coming talent, however. Ahead of the release, it has teased an indelible cut by none other than American DJ and producer TYGAPAW.
Like much of the boundary-pushing artist’s fare, “Diffusus” executes a fairly cerebral concept with the stark, stylized minimalism of early techno. The song’s haunting melody sets it apart from much of the brutalist sound design to be found on Tresor 30 without deviating too far from the aesthetic therein.
TYGAPAW Revisited
Born in Jamaica and based in New York City since the early 2000s, TYGAPAW (real name Dion McKenzie) is key personality in the city’s queer club scene. In 2015 they launched a party series called Fake Accent dedicated to platforming queer and trans artists of color.
In the time since, McKenzie has established themselves as a recording artist with EPs like Love Thyself in 2017 and Handle With Care in 2019. 2020 marked their debut studio-length album, GET FREE, featuring words by writer Mandy Harris Williams.
“Diffusus” by TYGAPAW is available for purchase in digital format via Tresor Records Bandcamp.
