Robert Hood will release a three-track EP by way of his own record label, M-PlantThe Struggle / Save The Children consists of a solo single as well as one from Floorplan, Hood’s side project with his daughter, Lyric Hood. It arrives in full August 14th, 2020.

“The Struggle” sees Hood pair acid techno with a sample of a speech given by Black Lives Matter activist Tamika Mallory in the wake of George Floyd‘s murder. “Save The Children,” on the other hand, incorporates audio from the late civil rights activist Dick Gregory. The effort will include a “Detroit Mix” of the latter track.

Techno Rebel

Robert Hood is certainly no newcomer to using techno as a social commentary tool. Alongside Jeff Mills and “Mad” Mike Banks, he founded a collective called Underground Resistance greatly responsible for the genre’s history as protest music.

Social issues aside, Hood has also provided commentary on the artistic direction taken by techno artists. “We have to be careful with the direction we’re taking,” he said in a 2017 interview. “Right now is a good time to break out and do something different and groundbreaking. It’s going to take new energy and young producers to be brave enough to do something extreme and radical.”

Lyric Hood also released a solo EP titled Everything / Social Distance via M-Plant on Friday, July 31st.
