Reactions to rumors of SoundCloud‘s imminent dissolution have taken a number of forms, but perhaps none have been as generous as Paul Woolford‘s recent gesture. Over the course of three days, the U.K. DJ and producer uploaded 20 unreleased tracks to his account as free downloads.
The 20 cuts span Woolford’s wide range of influences, with breakbeat, hardcore and garage accompanying the predominantly house and techno-inclined productions. All bear the hallmarks of his signature sound nonetheless. Minimalistic yet expertly crafted sounds fill the space in each unconventional arrangement, giving them equal parts conceptual merit and dance floor utility.
Paul Woolford intended to “go ham on SoundCloud before the platform goes out of the window,” although statements issued by the company’s leadership insists that the end might be further out than the rumors suggest. “There is no point in releasing everything,” Woolford continued. “Some things work as exercises or as developments on the way to other locations, but I think SoundCloud is a context in itself that is strong enough to warrant things being released on here alone.”
