Drivers at Burning Man Could be Subject to Drug Tests by Federal Agents

Even if there isn’t still a pond in the Burning Man playa come time for this year’s festivities, certain attendees might have something else to dodge. According to a Federal Register statement, agents will be given authority to drug test those driving to and from the 2017 edition of the festival at their own discretion.

Although selling cannabis has been legalized in Nevada as of July 1st, testing positive for as little as 10 nanograms of the substance per milliliter of urine can land a driver in jail. Law enforcement will be able to cite erratic driving or possession of drug paraphernalia as grounds for a screening.

Arrests at Burning Man have increased exponentially in recent years. In 2014 only seven attendees were detained in total, but last year’s installment saw the number grow to 46, with 37 resulting from drug-related offenses. Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen attributes the spike to the increase in onsite law enforcement in recent years.

The 2017 edition of Burning Man is slated to take place from Sunday, August 27th to Monday, September 4th in the Black Rock City desert outside Gerlach, Nevada.
