Selector takes great pride in developing each of our writers. Upon joining our team, every member of our editorial staff participates in a comprehensive crash course called Introduction to Electronic Music Journalism at no charge to them.
This coursework teaches the fundamentals of working in the media along with specific techniques to apply these concepts in the field. We intend for contributors of all experience levels to finish this orientation a better journalist than before, whether they go on to write with us or for another publication.
The Curriculum
The first part of our training session breaks down the fundamentals of effective writing, from the audience-centered approach to a refresher on basic grammatical and mechanical conventions. In this stage, we also emphasize the importance of journalistic integrity in hopes that each writer will recognize their greater social responsibility as a member of the media.
In the next part of the course, we hone in on concepts specific to writing for a music publication. We define the different types of coverage commonly published by such outlets and give best practices for interfacing with music industry professionals ethically and effectively.
In the final part of our orientation, we provide each writer with hands-on experience by teaching them how to format and publish their article using the industry-standard WordPress composer. We also train them on basic SEO and social media marketing practices to give their work as much exposure as possible.
Selector also commits to paying our writers for 100% of their published work. We believe that compensating skilled professionals for their time and effort is the only way to ensure they take personal ownership of our mission to deliver truly independent electronic music journalism.
