The anonymous watchdog has set their sights on Berlin artists Ricardo Villalobos and Dirty Doering as well as Amnesia Ibiza and Musiq Records in an open letter specifically focusing on dance music events they find questionable in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

The writer first addresses a Der Tagesspiegel interview with Dirty Doering (real name Velten Doering), calling it “likely one of the worst interviews we’ve ever read.” During the conversation, Doering defended his decision to play events in Tanzania – where the government has insisted that the country is COVID-19 free since June despite warnings from health professionals. He then discussed plans to travel to South Africa, saying, “Cape Town is not as dangerous as it is portrayed in the German media.”

“The views that Dirty Doering expresses in this interview are by no means rare but held by many of his peers,” Business Teshno writes. “The interview clearly reveals what a group of privileged DJs’ attitude towards plague raves is.”

The letter shifts focus to an organized by Amnesia Ibiza and Musiq Records that will run from March 5th-19th. MUSIQTRIP Zanzibar The Sandbank will see DJ sets by Ricardo Villalobos, Mar-TCAALGogo Sacco and Karlos Sense.

“This left us baffled,” they continued. “The same Ricardo Villalobos who has been known as a ‘leftwing idealist’ for years will be at the forefront of these raves in Africa. We urge them to act responsibly and postpone the event to a safer date or just cancel it altogether. We ask you to share this open letter and help raise awareness for the Black lives at risk.”

Sounds Familiar

Business Teshno’s letter is by no means the first time they’ve drawn attention to the perceived ethical shortcomings of event organizers and famous DJs. As restrictions lifted in many countries last summer, they documented the jet setting lifestyles of artists like Amelie LensDixonMichael Bibi and Denis Sulta.

Nor are they alone, for that matter. Last week, The Secret DJ – also an anonymous writer – published an open letter of his own on the matter in PRS for Music‘s M Magazine. Arguing that “law and personal morality diverge frequently,” he posited that gatherings being legal in places like Tulum don’t make them ethical.

Business Teshno are most active on Twitter and Instagram but can be found on Reddit and Facebook as well.

Samuel Rohrer’s “Microcosmoism” Remixed by Ricardo Villalobos and Burnt Friedman https://selector.news/2017/08/17/samuel-rohrer-microcosmoism-ricardo-villalobos-burnt-friedman/ https://selector.news/2017/08/17/samuel-rohrer-microcosmoism-ricardo-villalobos-burnt-friedman/#respond Thu, 17 Aug 2017 10:42:26 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=1206 Samuel Rohrer‘s unconventional style of techno has been further colored by two deserving creative visionaries. Ricardo Villalobos and Burnt Friedman have contributed the two remixes of “Microcosmoism” comprising the Range of Regularity Remixes 2 EP.

Considering that Rohrer’s background as a jazz musician resulted in a more organic interpretation of techno, Friedman’s own experimental approach does it justice. Virtually atonal save for a dissonant bass line, his remix of “Microcosmoism” makes for a meditative and atmospheric adaptation of the source material.

Rohrer’s six-track Range of Regularity EP arrived by way of German label arjunamusic in April. The first remix EP came out in June and consisted of remixes by Friedman, Villalobos and Vilod (the latter artist’s collaborative project with Max Loderbauer).

Friedman’s “Microcosmoism” remix is by no means the most avant-garde piece of music he’s put out in recent memory. Last month, he released a six-track EP titled Dead Saints Chronicles largely inspired by accounts of near-death experiences.

The Ricardo Villalobos and Burnt Friedman remixes of Samuel Rohrer’s “Microcosmoism” will officially come out as Range of Regularity Remixes 2 on September 29th.

Offline Records Debuts with Christopher Groove Single and Ricardo Villalobos Remix https://selector.news/2017/07/04/offline-records-christopher-groove-ricardo-villalobos-remix/ https://selector.news/2017/07/04/offline-records-christopher-groove-ricardo-villalobos-remix/#respond Tue, 04 Jul 2017 14:24:54 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=421 In the world of techno, enlisting Ricardo Villalobos to remix your inaugural release is as good a start to a record label as any. Brad Wilder and Christopher Groove launched Offline Records with the latter artist’s Secret Garden EP, which includes Villalobos’ reimagining of the title track.

“Secret Garden” itself is built largely from instrumental and atmospheric samples atop an almost tribal drum beat. The Ricardo Villalobos remix infuses more sterile sound design elements into its own arrangement, which strikes the ear more softly than the source material.

Groove, an Austrian DJ and producer, cites his time clubbing in Ibiza during last year’s holiday season as inspiration for the single. The release arrives during the European leg of Villalobos’ tour, which has recently brought him to Croatia, Estonia and the Netherlands.

Hailing from Berlin by way of Santiago, Chile, Ricardo Villalobos has been a staple of the minimal techno scene since the ’90s. The peak of his career thus far arguably when he was named #1 spot in Resident Advisor‘s Top 100 DJs of 2008.

Secret Garden officially comes out on Offline Records July 28th. Since the title of the SoundCloud playlist reads “part1,” it’s safe to expect that Christopher Groove will put out a second installment sometime in the months to follow.
