Goldie’s Timeless Gets a Triple Gold Vinyl Reissue for 25th Anniversary https://selector.news/2021/04/19/goldie-timeless-25-year-edition/ https://selector.news/2021/04/19/goldie-timeless-25-year-edition/#respond Mon, 19 Apr 2021 21:20:01 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=7831 Last year, Goldie launched a series of exclusive content to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his debut album, Timeless. Adding to the “Timeless Capsule,” as he calls it, is a triple gold vinyl reissue of the landmark Metalheadz release.

“A complex debut album, Timeless founded a new chapter in the history of the electronic genre,” reads a press release. “Originally reaching no. 7 in the charts, it has since been celebrated over two decades for its unique blend of sublime strings, beautiful atmospheres, and sophisticated vocals.”

“Inarguably an ambitious blueprint at the time,” it goes on, “Goldie’s production in 1995 fashioned the edgy rhythms and bass of jungle into a newly futuristic model, now globally admired as drum and bass.”

Goldie Timeless gold triple vinyl 25th anniversary

Goldie (real name Clifford Joseph Price) first made a name for himself breakdancing and selling grills before music took center stage in his creative pursuits. By the time he released Timeless, he had several years of production and remixing under his belt. The album would make an impact unlike any of his previous work, with key singles like “Inner City Life” featuring Diane Charlemagne making a strong case for the crossover appeal of drum and bass.

As part of the “Timeless Capsule,” dBridge, Roni Size and Binary State contributed to an “Inner City Life” remix pack that arrived in November. The following month, John B and Data 3 offered up remixes of the former artist’s “Up All Night” for the first release of a series called “25 Years of Metalheadz.”

Goldie – Timeless (25 Year Edition) is available in digital and triple gold 12-inch vinyl format ahead of its June 11th release here.

Upcoming Book, Who Say Reload, to Chronicle Jungle, Drum and Bass Classics https://selector.news/2021/02/02/who-say-reload-velocity-press/ https://selector.news/2021/02/02/who-say-reload-velocity-press/#respond Tue, 02 Feb 2021 19:30:14 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=6408 Velocity Press has announced an upcoming book highlighting the stories behind many jungle and drum and bass classics. Titled Who Say Reload, the book will feature words from the artists behind the music themselves.

Goldie (pictured above), Andy C, Ragga Twins, DJ Hype, and Krome & Time, are among the commentators recruited for the book in which a total of 36 songs will be broken down by their creators. With 174 pages and a hardback cover, author Paul Terzulli‘s words and Eddie Otchere‘s images make Who Say Reload a nice coffee table book for fans of the genres. The official description shares that Otchere was a photographer at Goldie’s Metalheadz nights and his unreleased pictures from the events will be included.

On the book’s official store page, Terzulli touched on why he decided to create Who Say Reload. He explained the mystery surrounding the genres and demonstrated how finding new music years ago was much more difficult than it is now. He went on to say that he sought to bring together the stories instead of leaving them dispersed across the internet.

“Despite the impact jungle had when it first hit, there was always an element of mystery about the music and its creators,” Terzulli wrote. “You could experience it through vinyl, tapes of raves and pirate radio and, assuming you were old enough, going out to the raves themselves.”

“However, finding out more about the creators of these futuristic soundscapes was a different task altogether,” he continued. “I felt that the stories of those responsible should be collated and presented in one place, rather than scattered across podcasts, YouTube videos and obsolete websites, or as anecdotes flickering past on a social media timeline.”

Who Say Reload will release in March and is priced at £20.00. You can pre-order the upcoming book on the Velocity Press’ website.

dBridge, Roni Size, Binary State Remix Goldie’s “Inner City Life” https://selector.news/2020/11/19/dbridge-roni-size-binary-state-remix-goldie-inner-city-life/ https://selector.news/2020/11/19/dbridge-roni-size-binary-state-remix-goldie-inner-city-life/#respond Thu, 19 Nov 2020 16:51:50 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=5456 Back in August, Goldie began sharing exclusive content as part of a “Timeless Capsule” commemorating the 25-year anniversary of his 1995 album, Timeless. The English DJ, producer and Metalheadz label boss has now released a remix pack for one of the effort’s most notable singles, “Inner City Life” featuring Diane Charlemagne.

Notable drum and bass royalty contributed re-rubs for Inner City Life (Timeless 25 Remaster)Roni Size‘s “Instant Mix” maintains the melodic ambience of the source material, whereas dBridge‘s “Sonic Nostalgia Mix” raises the tempo and incorporates eerie distortion. Binary State adapts the song into a progressive house groover, meanwhile, and [re:jazz] deliver a jazz cover of the definitive drum and bass track.

Goldie’s Golden Years

Longtime fans of Goldie (real name Clifford Joseph Price MBE) understand how momentous an occasion the 25-year anniversary of Timeless is for the multitalented artist. Building upon his already sturdy foundation as a breakdancer, graffiti artist, grill salesman and – from 1992 on – music producer, the album played no small role in establishing the mainstream crossover potential of drum and bass.

Timeless entered at #7 on the UK Albums Chart when it came out, and “Inner City Life” came in at #39 on the UK Singles Chart. “Goldie revolutionized jungle not once but thrice,” wrote Simon Reynolds in a 1994 issue of The Wire. “First there was ‘Terminator’ (pioneering the use of time stretching), then ‘Angel’ (fusing Diane Charlemagne‘s live vocal with David Byrne/Brian Eno samples to prove that hardcore could be more ‘conventionally’ musical), now there’s ‘Timeless’, a 22-minute hardcore symphony.”

Goldie Unveils the Timeless Capsule to Celebrate 25-Year Anniversary of Debut Album https://selector.news/2020/08/03/goldie-timeless-capsule/ https://selector.news/2020/08/03/goldie-timeless-capsule/#respond Mon, 03 Aug 2020 19:52:56 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=3165 July 31st, 2020 marked the 25-year anniversary of Goldie‘s debut album, Timeless. The British drum and bass innovator has announced plans to unload a “Timeless Capsule” of commemorative content through the rest of the year.

Goldie (real name Clifford Joseph Price MBE) kicked things off with a remix of “Inner City Life” by Peshay available for free download, along with the first part of an exclusive interview on Timeless with BBC Radio 1 host Pete Tong. Price promises “loads more exclusive content” to come in the months to follow.

The Timeless Music of Goldie

When Price released Timeless in 1995, he likely didn’t know how apt of a title he chose for the 14-track effort. Fusing breakbeats with symphonic elements, it made a strong case for the mainstream potential of drum and bass. The album started at #7 on the UK Albums Chart, and “Inner City Life,” which featured the late Diane Charlemagne, reached #39 on the UK Singles Chart.

Music aside, Price’s creative musings have manifested in a number of different forms. Prior to his career as a recording artist, he was part of a breakdance crew and spent time in the U.S. selling grills and making a name for himself as a graffiti artist.

Goldie Claims “Gentrification has Fucked Clubbing” https://selector.news/2017/08/01/goldie-claims-gentrification-fucked-clubbing/ https://selector.news/2017/08/01/goldie-claims-gentrification-fucked-clubbing/#respond Tue, 01 Aug 2017 14:29:17 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=993 Drum and bass pioneer Goldie has claimed that “gentrification has fucked clubbing,” arguing that the dance music scene is worse off than when he entered it in 1990.

In recent interview by The i Paper, Goldie was asked to recall some of his favorite club and career moments across his 26 years of tastemaking in the UK dance music scene. “I’m part of the fabric of this country,” he stated plainly, “the only thing we have is the freedom in our music.”

Among reminiscent talks of early club nights with Grooverider and the start of Goldie’s label, Metalheadz, the 51-year old producer had this to say about the current UK club scene:

They’re all gentrified. Gentrification has fucked clubbing. If you’ve got to get searched with someone’s finger up your arse to search for a pill just so you can go and see some live music, there’s something very wrong with the system. Because the last time I checked, this wasn’t an airport.

Goldie’s response echoes sentiments expressed by other long-established artists. Many believe that dance music’s club culture has lost the character it once had to mass commercialization and government regulation.

Goldie later likened himself to UK pop artist Ed Sheeran, saying that he regularly attended the famous drum and bass club The Blue Note after becoming the equivalent of a teenage heartthrob, something that would be unprecedented by a modern music celebrity.
Goldie recently released his seventh album The Journey Man, which can be found in multiple formats here.

Goldie Might Have Revealed Banksy’s Identity in an Interview https://selector.news/2017/06/23/goldie-revealed-banksy-identity-interview/ https://selector.news/2017/06/23/goldie-revealed-banksy-identity-interview/#respond Fri, 23 Jun 2017 00:48:41 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=206 What appears to have been a slip of the tongue has reignited longstanding suspicions about Banksy‘s identity. Drum and bass producer, label owner and time stretching pioneer Goldie made a comment during an appearance on Scroobius Pip‘s Distraction Pieces podcast that supports the theory that the graffiti artist is in fact Massive Attack founding member and vocalist Robert Del Naja.

After going on something of a tirade against Banksy during the interview, Goldie (whose real name is Clifford Joseph Price) referred to him by his first name. “Give me a bubble letter and put it on a T-shirt and write ‘Banksy’ on it and we’re sorted,” said Price. “We can sell it now. No disrespect to Robert, I think he is a brilliant artist. I think he has flipped the world of art over.”

Price and Del Naja are rumored to know each other well; both had been graffiti artists in the ’80s before garnering worldwide renown as musicians. Previously, Banksy’s politically charged pieces had been observed to pop up in locations where Del Naja had recently visited, although many speculate that a group of artists work collaboratively on the murals.

Robert Del Naja has neither confirmed nor denied the suspicions at this time.
