Change the Conversation
You’re here because you care about electronic music. We feel the same way.
Unbeholden to advertisers, Selector is able to cover music based on artistic merit alone as well as publishing pieces that hold electronic music institutions accountable. Your generous contributions are the sole reason this is possible. We appreciate all support, but we humbly ask that you consider signing up for a monthly donation as regular contributions go further towards helping us maintain a reliable baseline budget.
Selector is registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the U.S. state of Colorado. Our primary revenue source is donations from readers who believe in our mission. Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by U.S. law. Our Federal Tax ID is 85-1116402.
Where Your Contribution Goes
In 2021, 95% of Selector’s expenditures went to our program services. These presently include independent arts journalism and the mentorship resources we provide our writers. The remainder went to administrative costs.
Our goal for 2021 is to add 400 more regular donors and expand on program services by investing in our staff and audience strategy. Below are some of the most important ways that donations from the public allow Selector to operate differently from other media organizations covering the arts.
Better Journalists
All of Selector’s writers are compensated for their work. We believe this is the only way to ensure that their content meets our high standard for quality and credibility, assuring that each team member takes personal ownership of our mission to deliver truly independent electronic music journalism.
Selector also takes pride in conducting a comprehensive training course as part of the onboarding process for contributing writers. Introduction to Electronic Music Journalism, as we call it, starts with the fundamentals of credible, compelling, ethical writing and then covers more specific techniques that apply these concepts to our topic matter. Whether they stay with us or move on to write for another publication, we want each participant to finish this orientation a better journalist than they started out.
By donating to Selector, you not only make it possible for us to give more paid work to our existing write staff, but to hire and train additional contributors as well. With the skills and values we impart to them, we believe this will raise the bar on electronic music journalism across the board.
About the Music
The majority of music coverage published by Selector belongs to a series we call Sounds. Each one of these releases is chosen based on ratings given by a blind panel of industry professionals. No names or associations are visible when they rate each song – strictly the audio. It is our hope that other arts publications adopt this system as a means of eliminating bias from their selection process.
