The definitive ambient composer has announced an upcoming ten-track effort, FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE. It releases October 14th on Verve Records.

Ahead of the full album, Eno has shared the music video for a lead single titled “There Were Bells.” He recorded it while preparing for a 2021 performance at the Acropolis in Athens, including a somewhat rare vocal delivery.

“Garden Of Stars,” which Eno performed at the same event, will also appear on FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE.

According to a press release, anxieties around climate change inspired Eno’s 22nd solo album. “Like everybody else — except, apparently, most of the governments of the world — I’ve been thinking about our narrowing, precarious future, and this music grew out of those thoughts,” he said. “Perhaps it’s more accurate to say I’ve been feeling about it…and the music grew out of the feelings.”

“Those of us who share those feelings are aware that the world is changing at a super-rapid rate, and that large parts of it are disappearing forever…hence the album title,” Eno continues. “These aren’t propaganda songs to tell you what to believe and how to act. Instead they’re my own exploration of my own feelings.”

Delia Derbyshire Film Soundtrack by Cosey Fanni Tutti to Get Official Release https://selector.news/2022/07/13/delia-derbyshire-cosey-fanni-tutti-film-score/ https://selector.news/2022/07/13/delia-derbyshire-cosey-fanni-tutti-film-score/#respond Wed, 13 Jul 2022 15:10:38 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11798 October 2020 saw the BFI London Film Festival premiere of Delia Derbyshire: The Myths And The Legendary Tapes. Cosey Fanni Tutti delivered the film’s score, and it will release via her Conspiracy International label on September 16th.

Tutti of course incorporated Derbyshire’s own recordings into the soundtrack. Accompanying them are original compositions by Tutti herself which derive influence from the early electronic music innovator’s body of work. Ahead of the release, Tutti has shared a preview of the aptly titled “Psychedelic Projections.”

“The compositions are inspired by my research of the Delia Derbyshire audio archive, Delia’s original compositional notes and techniques which in combination with my admiration and love of Delia’s work provided a way to integrate her style and approach to music with my own,” said Tutti. “An alliance of our sensibilities.”

Derbyshire is celebrated as an electronic music trailblazer for her work with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop during the ’60s. She composed the iconic theme music for the television show Dr. Who, and after she died of renal failure in 2001 267 reel-to-reel tapes were found alongside over 1,000 papers in her attic. Shortly after the premiere of Delia Derbyshire: The Myths And The Legendary Tapes, Derbyshire’s career was also explored in a film titled Sisters with Transistors about female electronic music pioneers.

Cosey Fanni Tutti is an English musician and writer perhaps best known for her role in pioneering industrial music group Throbbing Gristle in the ’70s. Her body of work spans visual works, performance art, and even pornography. 2019 saw the release of her eight-song album, Tutti.

The Delia Derbyshire: The Myths And The Legendary Tapes soundtrack is available for preorder in clear vinyl record format via Cargo Records.

Carl Cox to Release First Album in Over a Decade, Electronic Generations https://selector.news/2022/06/20/carl-cox-electronic-generations/ https://selector.news/2022/06/20/carl-cox-electronic-generations/#respond Mon, 20 Jun 2022 15:33:59 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11726 Ten years can feel like a lifetime in the rapidly shifting world of dance music. It is fitting, then, that the first album from Carl Cox in more than a decade will go by the title Electronic Generations. It will release on BMG September 16th, 2022.

Electronic Generations comprises 17 tracks that started out as recordings of live hybrid sets from Cox’s Melbourne studio during lockdown. Each one has been remixed and reimagined in some way.

Accompanying the announcement is the effort’s lead single, a Nicole Moudaber collaboration called “How It Makes You Feel.” In a statement, Cox said he delivered a lighter version before Moudaber toughened up the concept.

“In today’s darkness of techno I wanted to create something more jovial,” said Cox. “So the original is quite an easy track to enjoy, it’s very bubbly and bouncy. But with this new version Nicole has made a very dark twisted reimagining. It’s now very much epic techno — which you have to play from beginning to end to get the full experience.”

Juan Atkins also remixed “Deep Space X” for the album; his version will arrive this summer. Fatboy Slim boasts a credit on Electronic Generations as well.

“As a live artist and a DJ, I get to play all over the world, and to see people enjoying the shared experience of being together and dancing,” Cox said. “I’ve pulled together all the elements that I’ve learned from watching those crowds, added my sound and tried to bring you a true electronic music experience.”

Jeff Mills Releases 9-Track Concept Album, Mind Power Mind Control https://selector.news/2022/06/10/jeff-mills-mind-power-mind-control/ https://selector.news/2022/06/10/jeff-mills-mind-power-mind-control/#respond Fri, 10 Jun 2022 17:15:08 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11693 Key Detroit techno personality Jeff Mills lives up to his penchant for provoking contemplative inquiry with his latest offering. As its title suggests, his nine-track album Mind Power Mind Control derives inspiration from forces of thought manipulation in the modern age. It released on Mills’ own Axis Records May 20th.

“The focus of this project and presentation examines the art of mental persuasion and how the mind can control as well as fall vulnerable to subservient ways,” Mills said of the album, according to a press release. “It allows the means to look creatively and more in-depth to a subject that applies to every person and at every stage of life because how we perceive or sense something is part of our evolutionary survival pattern.”

Mills statement continues: “Because there is no exact mental compatibility between any of us, speculation and misconceptions are not exemplary, so an emphasis on ‘the presentation of facts, ideas and methods and what we knew as true by example’ are the major points that drives the overall purpose of this album project.”

Jeff Mills – Mind Power Mind Control from AxisRecords on Vimeo.

The music itself encompasses a diverse range of rhythms, tempos, and textures without abandoning Mills’ experimental yet somehow familiar take on techno. Film score samples give way to tones reminiscent of Indonesian gamelan ensembles in “Scarlet,” whereas a syncopated beat creeps along to set a suspenseful ambience in “Hatsumi.” “Transmutation” comprises warbling, soft-edged synths juxtaposed with heavy bass stabs and no percussion to speak of. The digital release includes two bonus tracks: the vaguely orchestral “Radiance” and “Units.”

Few artists have contributed as much to the subtle mystique of techno as Jeff Mills. Originally a hip-hop DJ known as “The Wizard” for his sets on Detroit radio station WDRQ, he produced music as one half of the industrial duo Final Cut before making a name for himself globally as one of the cofounders of Underground Resistance. The group posed incisive social commentary on predatory music industry practices with the broader mission of paving a path forward for young, Black men.

In November of last year, Mills found himself on the receiving end of industry critique. Along with techno superstars like Amelie LensCarl Cox, and Sven Väth, he appeared on the lineup of a Saudi Arabian festival called MDL Beast. Human Rights Watch called the gathering a “reputation-launder scheme” and encouraged artists to speak against the Saudi government’s human rights abuses or not participate.

Mills defended his appearance in a subsequent statement. “…We never know who might be there in the audience, listening, and trying to connect with something greater than ourselves [sic],” he wrote. “This music needs to be accessible to anyone and everywhere!”

Jeff Mills also recently closed out the main stage of Movement Electronic Music Festival 2022 on the final day. Read Selector’s full review of the three-day gathering here, and purchase Mind Power Mind Control in digital or double 12-inch vinyl record format on the Axis Records website.

The ten-track LP will be released under the “Ron Trent presents WARM” banner as a nod to the album’s many collaborations as well as his dream of being an architect. “With WARM, through sound design, I built frameworks for the musicians, who furnished and occupied these structures,” Trent said of the LP.

Trent’s first single from the album is “Flos Potentia (Sugar, Cotton, Tobacco)” featuring Khruangbin. Other collaborators on the album include Azymuth, Gigi Masin, and Jean-Luc Ponty. “Each track was made with a guest in mind,” Trent said. “For example, when I started writing ‘Sphere,’ I immediately thought, ‘This IS [Jean-Luc] Ponty.’

Kerri Chandler Announces New Album, Spaces and Places https://selector.news/2022/04/26/kerri-chandler-spaces-places/ https://selector.news/2022/04/26/kerri-chandler-spaces-places/#respond Wed, 27 Apr 2022 01:41:51 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11453 Influential DJ and producer Kerri Chandler has announced a new album called Spaces and Places, to be released through his Kaoz Theory record label. It marks his first album since 2008’s Computer Games and will be released digitally and on vinyl.

Spanning 24 tracks, the album was produced over a four-year period in temporary studios set up at clubs such as Ministry of Sound in London, Knockdown Center in New York, and Lux Frágil in Lisbon. Each track was written and performed live on each club’s dance floor.

Speaking about why he chose to record it this way, Chandler said, “I wanted to express the love of what could be possible in capturing my productions in the venue, from the heart of the space, right on the dance floor.”

Chandler began producing music at the age of fourteen. Since the release of his first single SuperLover/Get It Off, he has released over 100 records.

The record follows a recent EP of his titled Lost & Found Vol. 1, released earlier this year. Last year, he debuted a new live show in London that shared the same name as his upcoming album.

To celebrate the announcement, Chandler released a single from the album titled “Never Through” featuring Sunchilde recorded at Printworks. Those interested can listen to the track here.

Orbital Announce New Album, Share Single Featuring Stephen Hawking https://selector.news/2022/04/26/orbital-30-something-where-going-stephen-hawking/ https://selector.news/2022/04/26/orbital-30-something-where-going-stephen-hawking/#respond Wed, 27 Apr 2022 01:36:47 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11450 British electronic music duo Orbital have announced the release of their new album, 30 Something. As part of the announcement, they shared a track titled “Where Is It Going?” featuring the late physicist and mathematician Stephen Hawking.

Produced as part of the 2012 London Paralympics Opening Ceremony, the track features Hawking speaking about his “complete theory of everything” over Orbital’s music.

On the single, Orbital said, “This is our special Paralympic version of ‘Where Is It Going?’, featuring the fantastic Stephen Hawking. He’s tackling the big question of the unification of physics and the understanding of a theory of everything. We’re not there yet, we can’t even find a unification socially as a species but hopefully one day we will find out where we are going…”

Consisting of brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll, the pair released most of their work from 1989-2004. They have reunited twice since then, releasing new albums both times. The group’s name is taken from Greater London’s orbital motorway (a freeway surrounding a city center), the M25 — an essential part of the city’s early rave scene.

The album is set to release on July 15th and is available to pre-order through numerous digital outlets. Those interested can find more information here.

Doc Martin and Hipp-E Release 2 Tracks Ahead of New EP https://selector.news/2022/04/08/doc-martin-hipp-e-jam-this/ https://selector.news/2022/04/08/doc-martin-hipp-e-jam-this/#respond Fri, 08 Apr 2022 10:58:59 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11373 West coast house DJs Doc Martin and Hipp-E have released two new tracks teasing their upcoming EP.

Titled Jam On This, the EP is set to release on April 22nd through Bambossa Records. The two singles shared ahead of the release are the title track and “Enjoy This Trip,” both of which combine hypnotic elements like reverb delay with chugging four-on-the-floor beats and earthy instrumentals.

Bambossa is run by Harry Romero, known as “Choo Choo” Romero, who has held residencies in Ibiza and clubs around the world. His label is known for curating Latin house producers. Its first release, a single called “Harry & Alex,” came out in 2000.

“These two need no introduction as they’ve been on the forefront of this thing we love so much
called house music,” said Romero in a statement. “It is with great pleasure to have them onboard. The vibes are undeniable on this dope EP.”

Doc Martin rose up through the Los Angeles rave scene in the early ’90s. After gaining recognition in the scene, he began touring globally and still performs at events like at Lightning In A Bottle, Desert Hearts, and others.

Starting at the age of 16, Hipp-E began his career in San Diego. His work caught the attention of record label Hooj Choons. Since then, he has toured around the world.

Detroit Duo Dopplereffekt to Release 1st Album in 5 Years https://selector.news/2022/04/03/dopplereffekt-neurotelepathy/ https://selector.news/2022/04/03/dopplereffekt-neurotelepathy/#respond Sun, 03 Apr 2022 19:08:40 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11307 Detroit-based electronic music duo Dopplereffekt are releasing their first album in five years, titled Neurotelepathy.

The ten-track LP will release digitally on April 14th via Leisure System, an independent record label based in Berlin. The duo are known for exploring scientific and mathematical themes in their work (such as 2017’s Cellular Automata), and Neurotelepathy delves deeper into their precise sound. “[Dopplereffekt] continue to use live appearances to present experimental trials of theoretical models, and that effort is heard in the sizzle and swing of the percussive highlights here,” reads the album description.

Their first album, an EP titled Fascist State, was released in 1995. Drawing heavily from influential German supergroup Kraftwerk, Dopplereffekt is widely believed to be the brainchild of Gerald Donald. His wife, No Nhan Le Thi, is also thought to be a part of the project — although Donald refuses to confirm whether or not this is true. Instead, Dopplereffekt tracks are credited to a wide range of German pseudonyms such as Rufold Klorzeiger and Heinrich Mueller.

Alongside musician James Stinson, Donald was one half of the Afrofuturist techno duo Drexciya. Under this name, the two built a mythology surrounding an underwater race of humanoids called the “Drexciyans.” Their music was maritime themed, and they only played wearing masks. Stinson passed away in 2002 from heart complications.
