New York City will be the first U.S. city to require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for indoor activities, including nightclubs.
“If you want to participate in our society fully, you’ve got to get vaccinated,” NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio announced in a Tuesday press briefing. “The only way to patronize these establishments is if you are vaccinated, at least one dose.”
The move comes as cases rise to record levels amid a rise in the Delta variant of COVID-19. As of Monday, August 3rd, NYC had seen an upward trend in infections with a seven-day average of 1,375 cases per day.
In order to attend an indoor venue/concert, attendees must present proof of having had at least one vaccine shot. They can use one of three methods: the NYC COVID Safe app, Excelsior Pass, or the standard vaccination card provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
These requirements are part of a new initiative called the “Key to NYC Pass.” The program aims to vaccinate as many people as possible and includes a $100 incentive for reluctant residents. On top of this, city workers must get weekly COVID-19 tests.
All of this comes as President Joe Biden continues pressuring state governors to get their constituents vaccinated. As of Monday, August 3rd, 60.2% of NYC residents have at least one shot while 55.1% have both.
The plan begins rolling out on August 16th, will full enforcement beginning on September 13th.
