Crackdowns that swept over the Ibiza nightlife scene in 2016 still persist through to the present day. Several nightclubs had been shut down following raids as part of what lawmakers had called “Operation Chopin” last year. Now, the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) has passed vague legislations which will further limit the activities of tourists visiting the White Isles.
The amendment to Ibiza’s tourist law, which passed on July 18th, allows officials to “regulate, determine or prohibit, in a reasonable manner, tourist activities” related to entertainment, according to Diario De Ibiza. The law will also affect the islands of Majorca, Menorca and Formentera.
In regards to the legislation, Ibiza council Director of Tourism Vicent Torres said, “It was very clear that the tourism law needed to be modified … previously liberal law offered the opportunity for activities that are incompatible with the day-to-day life of an island that wants a sustainable kind of tourism.”
The island’s municipalities will also be given authority to enforce further restrictions without obtaining secondary agreement from each council.
