Ibiza is slowly coming back to life after seemingly endless quarantine measures in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Balearic government has announced that the de-escalation process of said measures will begin March 2nd, with bars and restaurants then able to reopen outdoor seating areas and terraces. Indoor spaces are also slated to reopen on March 16th, provided the establishment has a CO2 meter installed and COVID-19 cases continue to trend downward. The Confederation of Business Associations in the Balearics sees the de-escalation timeline as “unsatisfactory,” as 80% of bars and restaurants in Mallorca do not have outdoor areas.
The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports that the Balearic islands currently sit at a high risk level, with 157.38 14-day cumulative incidence of coronavirus cases. The island of Ibiza remains at extreme risk level for 14 days.
In October 2020, a 1,000 person event was hosted at Sala Apolo in Barcelona as a trial run for COVID-19 rapid testing. Phase 3 reopening protocols prevented bars and nightclubs in Ibiza from operating through the end of 2020 and into 2021.
As the de-escalation process begins, tourists arriving to Ibiza from countries with an infection rate greater than 50 per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days will be required to present a negative COVID-19 test 48 hours prior to the flight.
