Selector’s Sounds series follows a procedure that puts music quality before status or industry relationships. Learn how it works.
When the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded last year, it sidelined much of Gothenburg collective STRECK‘s operations. They appear not to have wasted their newfound free time, however. On January 28th, they debuted as a record label with the release of a techno compilation titled STRECK VOLUME 1.
Stalwarts of the collective such as Stefán and SIMA offered up varying shades of peak-hour, sometimes melodic techno for the effort. The two artists contributed both individually and under their Rogue Wave project, and the latter’s collaboration with Kal Ket also appears on the tracklist. The arguable standouts of the compilation are “Tackjärnsgatan” by Stina Francina and “Obliged” by Neoandra for their unconventional sonic storytelling methods.
Specializing in “techno, trance and what makes us dance,” STRECK started out as a Gothenburg event brand. They expanded to include a a podcast series as the pandemic unfolded, and the label was already in the works as well. Even amidst restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus, they’ve managed to hold live-streamed events at such venues as HÖR and Funkhaus Berlin.
STRECK VOLUME 1 is available for purchase in digital and vinyl formats via Bandcamp.
