An upcoming book will tell the story of local club scenes throughout Africa and Europe over the last 60 years. The hotpots included can be found in its title, Ten Cities: Clubbing in Nairobi, Cairo, Kyiv, Johannesburg, Berlin, Naples, Luanda, Lagos, Bristol, Lisbon, 1960-Present. According to the book’s online listing, it will feature 21 essays and photo collections from twenty-six authors, showing how nightlife communities around the world are connected.
While the musical history of cities like Detroit, Chicago, and Berlin is well documented, many of the aforementioned ten cities are oftentimes overlooked. The book’s description makes note of this and explains the wealth of knowledge that can be found in these local stories.
“The image of the DJ dragging his record case through international “non-places” and deejaying in clubs around the globe is a contemporary cliché. But these club scenes have rich, geographically differentiated local histories and cultures. This book expands the focus beyond the North Atlantic clubbing axis of Detroit–Chicago–Manchester–Berlin.”
Readers will be offered an in-depth look at these local accounts as the book is 560 pages long. It will be published by Germany’s Spector Books, who focus on covering the “intersection of art, theory, and design” in their published works.
