Ethiopian Records Introduces Fundraiser for Ethiopian Artists Affected by COVID-19

Ethiopian Records has started a fundraiser in an attempt to raise money for Ethiopian artists affected by COVID-19.

Before the pandemic, the artist’s budding company, WAG Entertainment, were on track to introduce their own record label and build their own studio to support local artists. As was the case with many businesses around the world, the ongoing global health crisis has made the endeavor much more challenging for Ethiopian Records (real name Endeguena Mulu) and crew.

The money raised will also support the team’s upcoming double-EP, WEL. The 10-track release will debut alongside two music videos and artwork from a number of local collaborators. Mulu also stated that none of the equipment needed for recording will be rented, so everything obtained will be added to the eventual studio and will be used to help others bring their visions to life.

On the fundraising page, Mulu shared his inspiration behind his next body of work. “WEL means togetherness and it is inspired by Laureate Poet Tsegaye Gebremedhin’s poem recordings,” he said. “WEL calls for a loving joyful global revolution and asks for people to come forth and take charge of their destiny like we are trying to do as change only comes through revolution, and by demanding for it, lovingly and intentionally.”

On YouTube, Mulu shared a mini-documentary expounding the fundraiser and explaining the genre he helped pioneer, Ethiopiyawi Electronic.

Mulu is not simply asking for donations. He’s set up an Indiegogo page which rewards those who contribute to the cause based on the amount donated. Some of the items donors can obtain include signed artwork, private concerts, interactive Ethiopiyawi Electronic lessons, executive producer credits, and more.
