A mainstay in more obscure circles of Shanghai’s electronic music scene is at risk of closure due to COVID-19. The club ALL has launched an emergency fundraiser to remain in business despite pandemic-related losses.
According to a statement posted on WeChat, ALL must raise over ¥300,000 (roughly $42,000 USD) or face closure. To that end, they are selling merchandise. “Support has been amazing so far,” Gaz Williams, who runs the club, told Resident Advisor. “We are well on our way of reaching the target if this momentum continues.”
Shelter and All
ALL is the second Shanghai nightlife destination co-founded by Williams for fans with more eclectic tastes. Previously, he ran a space called The Shelter that offered much of the same. Occupying a literal bomb shelter, it boasted minimal noise bleed and obscure entertainment.
2016 marked the end of The Shelter on account of Williams and company not being able to renew their license. The following year ALL opened for business. Although a smaller space, it serves more diverse functionality without deviating from its predecessor’s experimental vision.
Chinese residents can buy fundraiser merchandise via Yumi and supporters from the rest of the world can do so via Bandcamp.
