Just two days before it was scheduled to begin, The BPM Festival has announced the postponement of its Costa Rica edition. Originally set for January 12th-18th in the Costa Rican town of Tamarindo, the event does not have new dates as of this writing.
In a statement dated January 10th on their website, organizers wrote, “This morning the Costa Rican President released new COVID-19 restrictions banning mass events from January 11th-23rd. As a result we are forced to announce the postponement of The BPM Festival: Costa Rica 2022.”
The government ban on mass gatherings comes as Costa Rica sees a surge in COVID-19 cases. While announcing the ban, officials stated that “In just the first seven days of 2022, 11,999 infections were registered, practically the same figure accumulated during the final 61 days of the previous year when there were 12,2000 positive cases.”
More than 200 artists were scheduled to play the festival, whose organizers stand to lose millions of dollars due to the postponement. This development comes as other festivals in Central America are forced to cancel their events due to the surge of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Originally scheduled for January 8th-11th, Mexico’s Departure Festival was called off due to new government restrictions as well.
BPM ticketholders have the option to roll their ticket over to the 2023 event, receive a refund, or exchange the value of their pass for BPM merchandise.
