KIA Motors is taking a unique approach to promoting their automotive brand relaunch by releasing a free software synthesizer.
The move.ment synth is a plugin based around the concept of pink noise, or 1/f noise. Pink noise gives off less “hiss” and is often described as a “deeper” sound. Examples include the sounds of natural systems like surf and wind. Pink noise also helps people fall asleep and retain focus due to its sound masking properties.
move.ment’s features are straightforward, with VCO, noise, reverb, filter and two ADSR envelopes. A touchpad keyboard sits below the synth, fit for computers with touchscreen capability.
KIA’s statement describes the synthesizer in more detail on their page:
“The sounds of movement in nature produce what’s known as pink noise. This increases the alpha waves in the brain, inducing the flow state of consciousness, the state in which the brain is at its most creative. These natural sounds were recorded all over the world and used to develop the one-of-a-kind instrument that we call move.ment.”
Along with the synth, KIA released WAVE – a compilation of artists using move.ment to create their songs. Listen to the tracks on the SoundCloud playlist below:
The KIA move.ment app is free for Mac and Windows users. Find more information and download the it on KIA’s website.
