Numerous music and dance communities in the Philippines and beyond are raising funds after a super typhoon hit the country.
Just before Christmas, Super Typhoon Rai (A.K.A. Typhoon Odette) touched down in the Phillippines. The typhoon wrecked homes, destroyed farms, and knocked out power throughout the country. Hundreds of people have been killed, while more than four million residents are affected.
Manila Community Radio, a Philippines-based community hub for local DJs and producers, has published a list of non-governmental groups working in affected areas. They request that those wanting to help send cash donations to them.
A Hong Kong-based online record store and party series named Bad Times Disco is also joining efforts to raise cash. They recently launched a fundraiser for Kids for Kids PH, a youth-oriented climate advocacy group. The organization is currently working on providing food to affected locals and aiding in cleanup efforts.
Los Angeles-based underground producer Free The Robots (real name Chris Alfaro) is also starting a fund to help rebuild the island of Siargao. Sharing clips from the region via Instagram, he wrote, “My team and I are working on our own fund to help rebuild Siargao. We have been strategizing daily how to execute an efficient way to distribute food, water, and supplies to our community for the long hall.”
