Renowned ambient music artist and composer Brian Eno called NFT artists “little capitalist assholes” in a recent interview.
Speaking with The Crypto Syllabus, Eno gave his views on NFTs. In it, he said, “I’ve been approached several times to ‘make an NFT.’ So far, nothing has convinced me that there is anything worth making in that arena. ‘Worth making’ for me implies bringing something into existence that adds value to the world, not just to a bank account.”
“NFTs seem to me just a way for artists to get a little piece of the action from global capitalism, our own cute little version of financialization. How sweet – now artists can become little capitalist assholes as well.”
NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are a relatively new way for artists to sell digital artwork. Pieces are bought using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum. What makes an NFT valuable according to its proponents is the blockchain. Using this technology, artists are able to create “digital scarcity” since each NFT is stored in one specific place on the blockchain of which NFT enthusiasts can claim ownership.
Recently, a group made a collection of NFT music by turning the genetic code of COVID-19 into 10,000 unique ambient tracks.
