The Spanish isle of Ibiza is known to many as the party capitol of the world – but in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the destination has yet to see a return to its former glory. That could all change sooner rather than later. The Balearic government and the Ibiza Leisure Association have agreed to host an outdoor event with a 2,000 person capacity in late June or early July.
Tourinnews reports that the test event’s location has yet to be announced, but Ibiza Leisure Association manager José Luis Benítez is hopeful for a positive outcome. If findings show a low enough rate of coronavirus transmission tied to the event, Benítez believes it could usher in a return to normalcy.
“Nightlife will return to Ibiza,” Benítez told Tourinnews. “We’ll have it very soon, but it will be different.”
Attendees will only be admitted if they present a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours before the event, have previously contracted the virus, or show proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
News of the pilot event comes after the first meeting in over a year between the Balearic government and Ibiza’s nightlife association, ABONE, where the reopening of the island’s nightclubs was discussed.
