On Saturday evening, Berlin police received a complaint about a 200-person gathering taking place at Magdalena in spite of COVID-19 restrictions. Upon arrival, they found that an event was being live streamed from the nightclub with only performers and staff in attendance.

The caller, according to Berliner Zeitung, saw the number of people viewing the Facebook Live broadcast and mistook it for a count of physical partygoers. The team of police officers sent to investigate could hear the bass of kick drums outside the club, but they couldn’t see much through the windows.

The officers rang the front doorbell until a staff member finally let them in. After learning that the called had made an error, they left and allowed the live stream to continue.

The event in question was Magdalena’s nine-year anniversary celebration, which ran from Saturday evening to early Sunday morning. Thomas Schumacher, Thomas Lizzara, Daniel Boon, Drauf & Dran, Daniela Hensel, Basstronauten and Zusan performed throughout its eight-hour runtime.

Berlin’s world-famous nightlife scene remains largely on hold due to restrictions imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19. The struggle of beloved institutions like TresorWatergate ClubSuicide Circus and KitKatClub will be explored in an upcoming book titled HUSH.

A recording of Magdalen’s nine-year anniversary live stream is available to watch from their Facebook page.
