Like those of countless nightlife hubs across the globe, Berlin clubs have largely remained quiet during the COVID-19 pandemic. Writer Timo Stein and photographer Marie Staggat set out to capture this peculiar moment in history from these spaces’ vantage point in an upcoming book titled HUSH. It’s slated to be published March 1st via Parthas Verlag.
Among the 40 clubs visited by Stein and Staggat from April to December were Tresor (pictured above), Watergate Club, SchwuZ, Weekend, OHM, Sameheads, Paloma, KitKatClub, GRETCHEN, Else, Suicide Circus and Arena. Alongside photos taken at each establishment are interviews with their staff.
“During their club quarantine tour, [Stein and Staggat] encountered people who are not only struggling to keep their jobs, but also fear losing the place they call home,” reads a press release. “They met them in locations that were created for people, but which also leave an impact when completely empty.”
Marie Staggat worked at Tresor herself as a photographer at the age of 21; she published her first book, 313ONELOVE, about Detroit electronic music in 2016. Timo Stein has written and edited for the likes of Spex, Cicero, Der Tagesspiegel and Rhein-Zeitung.
HUSH will be available for order March 1st on the Parthas Verlag website.
