Selector’s Sounds series follows a procedure that puts music quality before status or industry relationships. Learn how it works.

German DJ and producer 30drop has delivered a hard techno single titled “Obsessively” along with a remix by Speedy J on the flip side. While the release holds up on its own merit, the artist has also dedicated it to Throbbing Gristle lead singer and “godparent of industrial music” Genesis P-Orridge. It released in digital and 10-inch dubplate format December 30th.

“Obsessively” is driven by an undulating, psychedelic bass line framed by artful noise and underpinned by cinematic percussion that takes a syncopated turn at the breakdown. For the remix, Speedy J (real name Jochem George Paap) adds more negative space to the arrangement – especially at a section in which the music gives way to muffled audio samples. Each arrives as a separate manifestation of the same experimental spirit, offering the listener just enough of the familiar while exploring seldom-heard sonic territory.

In Memory of Genesis P-Orridge

30drop, who also designs art installations outside of DJing and production, dedicated “Obsessively” to Genesis P-Orridge. The singer, songwriter, poet and occultist left an indelible mark on experimental music before their death in March 2020 at age 70.

“Genesis P-Orridge dedicated their life obsessively to artistic creation and transgression which s/he used as tools to fight against what is established in today’s Western society,” wrote 30drop.

“This track is my tribute to their figure and artistic legacy,” he went on. “And a way of understanding art which unfortunately is in disuse. I have also been lucky enough to have Speedy J contribute his vision with a remix of the track, creating an exceptional wall of sound piece.”

The 10-inch dubplate of “Obsessively” is limited to only 25 copies. Orders in both digital and vinyl format can be made via 30D Records Bandcamp.
