Last Friday, Seuil released a minimal house and techno EP titled In Vino Veritas on London label Cartulis Music. Up-and-coming U.K. artist Sohrab has accused the French DJ and producer of plagiarizing his unreleased track, “Old Beginning,” for a song that appeared on the effort, “Keep It Natural (No Mouse Edit).”
Taking to Instagram, Sohrab argued that “There is a (not-so) fine line between inspiration or sampling and plagiarism. In a close knit, niche scene like ours, this type of blatant copying is extremely disrespectful. Not only towards an up-and-coming artist like myself, but also towards the label involved, who now find themselves in the awkward and undeserved situation of releasing a plagiarized work.”

Resident Advisor notes that Cartulis had already made a statement on the matter by the time Sohrab’s post went live. The label said that Seuil had denied plagiarizing “Old Beginning,” but that they had tried to get it pulled from Juno Records – although 200-300 copies of the vinyl record had already been sold.
“Our opinion about this case of alleged plagiarism on our label, will remain private between ourselves and the involved parties,” the label wrote. “We understand there are two sides to every story and this situation is impossible for us to decide for 100% who is right or wrong.”
“However, we can say loud and clear, that Cartulis Music condemns every kind of plagiarism,” the statement went on. “The sad part is that once you plagiarize, the first person you’re lying to is yourself.”
Seuil has not publicly responded to Sohrab’s accusation at the time of writing.
