Tiziano Popoli Anthology Series to Release via RVNG Intl.’s Freedom To Spend Imprint

The ’80s works of Tiziano Popoli will be explored in a series of albums compiled by RVNG Intl. imprint Freedom To Spend. The first installment, Burn The Night / Bruciare La Notte: Original Recordings, 1983–1989, comprises 14 of the Italian avant-garde composer’s works. It’s due out January 22nd, 2021.

Resident Advisor notes that Popoli combined elements of pop music and new wave to yield a unique signature sound ahead of its time. Indeed, the organic textures and understated chord progressions of songs like “Iunu-Wenimo” predated similar elements appearing in minimal house and techno by at least a decade. Popoli was also an early adopter of vocal sampling technology as well as devices like the Roland TR-909 and Yamaha DX7.

“Pop music is something that – somehow – made its way into my music, even the [music] I write today,” said Popoli, who now teaches Musical Informatics at the Vivaldi Music Institute in Bolzano. “What attracts me about this ‘genre,’ or rather, ‘attitude’ is probably the simplicity of its formal structure.”

A portion of proceeds from Burn The Night / Bruciare La Notte: Original Recordings, 1983–1989 will be donated to Greenpeace. Find the compilation’s full tracklist below and pre-order it in vinyl format via Bandcamp.
