Switzerland Clamps Down on Nightlife amid Second Wave of COVID-19 Outbreaks

Numerous European countries have reported COVID-19 case counts eclipsing March and April figures. France and Germany announced strict lockdowns to curb the spread of the virus, and Switzerland has followed suit.

The Swiss government has not imposed as sweeping of guidelines as its neighbors to the North, to be sure. Discos and nightclubs must remain closed as of Wednesday, but bars and nightclubs can operate up to 11:00 PM. Meanwhile, sporting and cultural events have a capacity of 50 with no more than 10 for private gatherings.

“We all want Switzerland to be able to manage and overcome this crisis as a united country,” Swiss President Simonetta Sommaruga said during a press conference. “No one wants to see another lockdown.”

Switzerland’s response to COVID-19 was among the swiftest of any European nation. Lawmakers began to impose restrictions as early as February – and, in turn, eased them sooner. Gatherings of up to 1,000 were permitted as of June, with social distancing guidelines loosened in bars and restaurants.

Switzerland’s new COVID-19 guidance will remain in effect until further notice from public health officials.
