A new documentary available as part of Amsterdam Dance Event‘s ADE Online programming explores the history of iconic nightclub Paradise Garage.
Larry’s Garage is an in-depth look at one of New York City’s most storied nightclubs, and legendary DJ Larry Levan, who is closely associated with the venue. Featured in the documentary is a previously unpublished interview with the late Levan, who passed away in 1992 due to heart failure as a result of endocarditis.
Directed by Corrado Rizza, the film explore’s Paradise Garage’s storied tenure on King Street in New York City. The club was a notable discotheque, especially for those in the LBGT community. Though the term “garage music” came about as a description of the house and disco that was being played at Paradise, many styles were played by Larry Levan and the other artists who performed at the club. Among those artists: Whitney Houston, Paul Oakenfold, Madonna, The Pointer Sisters, Luther Vandross, and many other notable musicians.
Larry’s Garage has a sharp focus on the life of Levan and his deep involvement with Paradise Garage, but also features talks with Oakenfold, as well as Barbara Tucker, Louie Vega, Francois K, and others.
Rizza’s documentary is streaming now on Amsterdam Dance Event‘s official website.
