With COVID-19 sidelining festivals the world over, Semibreve in Portugal will follow a significantly different format for their 2020 event. October 24th and 25th, will mark the brand’s 10th anniversary. Unlike in years past it will largely be enjoyed online.
Confronted with the task of presenting “a program to be enjoyed at distance,” Semibreve’s organizers have focused on specially commissioned sound installations and audiovisual experiences in addition to roundtable discussions. The event will still take place at Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães near Braga in northern Portugal. All entry regulated in accordance with the country’s emergency pandemic guidelines, however.
Keith Fullerton Whitman, Beatriz Ferreyra, and Jessica Ekomane are among the artists commissioned for sound pieces. Four roundtable discussions will take place: “The physical and the virtual,” “Sound and ecology,” “Post-pandemic editorial logic,” and “Post-pandemic performative logic.” Laurel Halo, Klara Lewis, Oliver Coates, and Gustavo Costa will deliver filmed performances for online attendees.
