Berlin partygoers were able to once again experience a bit of the nightlife as more than 50 events were held in the city over the weekend.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the world’s nightlife industry has been struggling to stay afloat amid closures. A recent report from Resident Advisor detailed the return of the nightlife to the German capital, where indoor shows are still prohibited but outdoor events with social distancing can host up to 5,000 people. These rules are further expanded in the city’s official hygiene framework concept linked in the report.
An anonymous attendee spoke to the publication and remarked on how it was nice to be at a show, but the restrictions limited their enjoyment. “Yes, the music was amazing and hearing it on a big sound system was a privilege that most in the world cannot get right now, but the spark had gone, and the magic was just not working,” they said. “The crowd was great, loads of familiar faces and dance floor friends that I haven’t seen in over half a year, but if you’re not allowed to have a dance with them, what’s the point?”
The people of Berlin have been looking at ways to safely bring back their nightlife until a COVID-19 vaccine is available. Last month, Selector reported on a new contact tracing app that became available to venue proprietors. Other new technology popping up each day could help the city restart its dormant nightlife scene, assuming they receive the necessary permission from authorities.
