As with countless events around the world, Cape Town Electronic Music Festival (CTEMF) 2020 did not move forward on account of the COVID-19 pandemic. The gathering’s organizers have instead released a fundraiser compilation of music from would-be headliners titled Friends & Frequencies.
Appearing on the 137-song tracklist are international names like Henrik Schwarz, Egyptian Lover and Ectomorph. As far as South African talent is concerned, Rose Bonica, Black Coffee and Culoe De Song are among the better-known artists who contributed to the effort. Also included in a full album purchase are performance videos shot in Cape Town’s Two Oceans Aquarium, a guide to the city’s cultural institutions, and digital artwork by the likes of Abdul Qadim.
The album description states that the release will raise “funds for artists and the industry supply chain affected by COVID-19.”
CTEMF debuted in 2012 and has grown to become a staple of South Africa’s electronic music scene. It has grown to include satellite events throughout the country in addition to a socioeconomic empowerment initiative called CTEMF Connect.
