Selector’s Sounds series follows a procedure that puts music quality before status or industry relationships. Learn how it works.

Arriving by way of Minneapolis record label Northern Parallels is the latest minimal techno effort by Gabriella Vergilov. The Bulgarian-born, Belgium-based DJ and producer delivered the Don’t Be A Stranger EP on August 24th, 2020. It comprises three original singles as well as a remix by Jason Patrick and Mike Derer in addition to another by Hiroko Yamamura.

The title track sees Vergilov paint in suspenseful shades in the minimal techno spectrum, with Derer and Patrick chopping the song’s haunting vocals and incorporating nostalgic synths in their rendition. Vergilov further explores the same challenging yet palatable stylistic range in “So Cool So High,” whose remix by Yamamura bears the instantly recognizable hallmarks of acid techno. “In The Jungle” closes out the EP on a functional note with production elements well suited for a peak-time DJ set.

Humble Beginnings

Gabriella Vergilov hails from a small Bulgarian town called Tutrakan. Classically trained as a pianist, she first dreamed of becoming a singer before a move to Copenhagen, Denmark exposed her to DJ and remix culture.

Vergilov debuted on Brooklyn record label THEMA with the aptly titled Her Beginning EP in 2016, which was supported by Berlin techno mainstay Ben Klock. 2018 saw another crucial cosign when Minneapolis figurehead DVS1 opened his Fabric Records mix with “Boring Shit” off of her EP, Termosfera.
