Renowned soft-synth developer discoDSP has released an overhauled version of their classic analogue-inspired polyphonic virtual synthesizer. The OB-Xd 2.0’s overall sound and behavior mimic the OB-X, OB-Xa and Ob8 synthesizers manufactured from 1979-1981 by Oberheim Electronics, with more modern features included in the virtual package.
The synth features a new filtering system, with five cutoff settings across 12dB and 24dB modes. Additionally, OB-Xd 2.0 is also the first version in the series to have full compatibility with Linux and MacOS , MIDI CC support for controllers, support for Apple Audio Unit (AU), VST2 and VST3 environments. It can now run as a standalone program.
Other features include an HiDPI mode for retina display monitors and a sleek, dark redesign, giving the OB-Xd 2.0 close resemblance to the classic look of the original Oberheim line.
OB Xd 2.0 was originally posted as a free download from the online music production forum KVR Audio in 2013, until discoDSP – known for the Nord Lead-emulating Discovery synthesizer – gained the rights to update and improve the OB-X software series a few years after its discontinuation.
