Selector’s Sounds series follows a procedure that puts music quality before status or industry relationships. Learn how it works.

DEAD CERT. Records has given a home to the latest effort of a Portugese techno mainstay. Moonscope marks Holldën‘s debut on the U.K. label. The four-track minimal techno EP arrives July 13th, 2020.

The abstract signature sound of Holldën (real name Miguel Duarte) is on full display in Moonscope. At once atmospheric and suspenseful, each single touches on elements of deep, acid and hard techno. “Super Moon” and “Blue Moon” (which respectively begin and close out the EP) are largely percussive, whereas “Harvest Moon” and “Blood Moon” are driven by dissonant synths.

Duarte’s career as a DJ and producer extends back to the turn of the millennium. He ended a long hiatus from electronic music in 2016 to launch his own record label, Kuiper Noise, which he inaugurated with the four-track Telahbarbital EP the following year. He’s also released on such labels as Disturb •AffektCoincidence Records and Decoy Records.

DEAD CERT has come to be a respected banner in the techno undercurrent. A joint venture between deathtechno.com founder Jack! Who? and William Welt of 22 Digit Records, the label has provided a platform for the likes of TruncateAudio InjectionEchoplex and Paul Mac.
