A publisher dedicated to documenting Chicago history has set their sights on house music once again. Beyond Heaven: Chicago House Party Flyers – Volume II is out now by way of Almighty & Insane Books.
Spread out over 96 pages are materials used to promote Chicago house events that took place from 1981-1992. Among the more notable names that appear are Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Armando and Terry Hunter.
Volume I came out in 2018 and offered “a taste of what many consider to be the best times of their lives, and for others acts as a gateway to one of greatest eras in the history of Chicago music,” according to 5 Magazine. Windy City DJ Mario “Liv It Up” Luna then stumbled upon a second cache of old flyers, allowing for a follow-up edition.
“As with the original, this book reflects a mix of figures and parallel movements that were entangled with the world of house,” reads Volume II‘s blurb. “From dance groups to party crews, along with promoters, labels, and record stores, both well established and lesser known—all are points of departure to good memories and/or further investigations into one of the greatest eras in the history of Chicago music, with a legacy that is profoundly influential to this day.”
