Commemorating what would have been the 86th birthday of Bob Moog will be a live-streamed fundraiser event series. The Bob Moog Foundation has announced that Moogmentum in Place will run from May 9th-31st, 2020. $5-10 donations are suggested and will go towards the foundation.
Musical performances, talks and Q&A sessions comprise the series. Composer Alex Wurman; musical director Greg Phillinganes; composer Michael Whalen; former Earth, Wind & Fire bandmate Larry Dunn; theremin player Randy George; and electronic violinist Martha Mooke will make appearances.
Lasting Legacy
Moog is arguably the most recognizable name in modern synthesizers. The American engineer invented an eponymous synthesizer in 1964 whose undulating sounds grew ubiquitous in contemporary music. The Minimoog in particular played an undeniable role in the evolution of electronic music. On August 21st, 2005, Bob Moog died of a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor at the age of 71.
“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my father’s birthday and the anniversary of the Moogseum than to share an exploration of the Moog legacy through music, educational insights, and inspiration,“ said his daughter, Michelle Moog-Koussa, the foundation’s executive director in a quote obtained by Synthtopia. “We are deeply grateful to all of the musicians who are donating their time and talents to help share the transcendental power of music with a worldwide community during this difficult time, and to help raise much-needed funding for the Foundation due to the closing of the Moogseum in mid-March.”
