A fictional story set in the German techno scene of the ’90s will be published in English for the first time. Rainald Goetz‘ 1998 novel, Rave, has been translated by Adrian Nathan West. It will arrive by way of London publisher Fitzcarraldo Editions on July 1st, 2020.

Rave marked the first of five works by Goetz comprising what Fitzcarraldo has dubbed a “history of the present” collectively titled This Morning. The publisher says that the book resulted from collaborations between Goetz and such core techno personalities as Sven Väth and DJ Westbam. As a whole, the series offered a critique of 1990s pop culture.

Goetz has covered far more ground throughout his career as an author. Titles like 1983’s Insane and 1998’s Kontrolliert examined clinical psychiatry and the Red Army Faction, respectively. The former text was also translated by West and republished by Fitzcarraldo in 2017. The publisher has dabbled in books on music before as well – notably Ian Penman‘s 2019 title, It Gets Me Home, This Curving Track.

More information can be found via Rainald Goetz’ page on the Fitzcarraldo Editions website.
