Catz n’ Dogz A.K.A. Grzegorz Demiañczuk and Wojciech Tarañczuk have breathed new life into a piece of classic soul from half a century ago. The Polish DJ/producer duo have remixed Marlena Shaw‘s 1969 single “Woman of the Ghetto” as a wonky house cut for release on their Pets Recordings imprint.
The sample in question has been a staple of DJing and remixing culture for some time now. Perhaps most notably, St. Germain incorporated it into his 2000 acid jazz hit, “Rose Rouge.” Demiañczuk and Tarañczuk fitted their own version with understated piano chords as well as a menacing acid bass line that kicks in well after the halfway mark.
“It’s been sampled by a lot of other people like Bob Sinclar, Grandmaster Flash and the famous ’90s hit from Blue Boy,” Catz n’ Dogz said of the sound byte. “We have a lot of memories with this vocal because we were growing up in the ’90s. That’s why we decided to do our take on this one.”
