Murmurs about Amoeba Music‘s dubious future have begun to circulate once again. In 2016 it came to light that the historic record store might get bulldozed to make way for a new skyscraper. A new statement issued on behalf of the shop suggests that the possibility remains, but that Amoeba will live on in one form or another.
Last September, a CGI rendering made by architecture firm Shimahara for a building proposed to occupy the space by GPI Properties made its rounds online. Shortly after speculations resurfaced, a new statement has been posted to the Amoeba Music Facebook page. It reads:
We are in discussions to remain at 6400 Sunset beyond our current lease, but we are also exploring our various options and have already been offered several spaces that could suit us well. We will choose what is best at the appropriate time. Amoeba loves LA, we are committed to LA, and we have every intention of remaining in LA.
The plot of land on which Amoeba is located was purchased by GPI for $34 million. The 28-story skyscraper, which would consist of 232 residential units and 7,000 feet of commercial space, still must be approved by city lawmakers.
If Amoeba Music’s current building is demolished as proposed in 2019, the new structure will be projected for completion sometime in 2021.
