London Mayor Sadiq Khan has taken his advocacy of local nightlife to a new level. He was among the more outspoken defenders of Fabric London during its closure proceedings before the Isle of Wight Council in 2016, and now he’s laid out a plan to transform London into a “24-hour city.”
Khan revealed a proposal titled “From good night to great night: a vision for London as a 24-hour city.” The literature therein suggests policy changes that would protect bars, nightclubs and venues throughout the city.
“Undoubtedly cities need good homes, good jobs, safe streets and efficient transport,” reads a passage from the foreword. “But successful cities are also creative cities … And creative cities thrive at night.”
The proposal cites such issues as “rising rents and pricing” as well as increased business rates as factors threatening “night time economy.” It goes on to identify ten principles for the development of an initiative called London at night.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has not suggested a timeline for London at night to go into effect. Read “From good night to great night: a vision for London as a 24-hour city” in full here.
