Vice Media Downsizing, Discontinues Thump Section of Website

An era in the electronic music media has come to a close. Vice Media has revealed plans to lay off 2% of its staff, and among the more notable casualties is Thump, the dance music branch of its media empire.

According to Variety, Vice Media is projected to operate in 80 countries by the first quarter of 2017 and will open offices in both Mumbai and Dubai. However, the company will expand on its video content at the expense of its more traditional editorial avenues.

Thump had launched in 2013, at the height of the North American festival boom. In its coverage of both EDM and more traditional electronic music, the outlet was among the more authoritative voices. In addition to breaking such hard-hitting stories as NYC nightclub Verboten’s 2016 fraud allegations, the brand served as a definitive resource on emerging trends in electronic music.

Vice.com will continue to provide nightlife coverage, but it will be consolidated onto its main website.
