A prominent figure in the Chicago techno community has shared potentially tragic news. Jeff Derringer, a longtime Smart Bar resident and mastermind behind the club’s Oktave series, has revealed that he must take time off from playing records to undergo cancer treatment.
The DJ and producer will get tumors removed from the base of his tongue and his lymph nodes as part of a surgical procedure, and it’s not the first time he’s dealt with such an illness. “I’ve beaten this dreadful disease once before and I fully intend on doing so again,” he tweeted yesterday. “I would ask for your positive thoughts and energy while I deal with this setback.”
Derringer said that his hiatus would be indefinite, but was hopeful that it wouldn’t extend past six months. “I have some production projects in the pipeline, including something very exciting relating to Oktave, that I plan to continue while I’m dealing with my medical situation,” he wrote.
Jeff Derringer has previously released music on Soma, Electric Deluxe and Perc Trax.
